The auto-reverse tape deck of the Secloff series employs three components : a servo motor, a closed-loop dual capstan system, and an F & F head + FET amplifier.

It is a 4-head configuration of 4-track type erasure x2, recording and playback. It can operate in a 3-head system in both forward and reverse directions.
This head uses Sony's proprietary rotobilateral head system. A recording head and a reproducing head are placed close together as a block and rotated 180 degrees to achieve an erase-recording-playback head arrangement in both normal and reverse directions.

The head uses an F & F (ferrite & ferrite) head that achieves about 200 times more durability than conventional heads by finishing the core and guard with ferrite. In addition, the head is fused and welded with strain-free glass of the same hardness to prevent disturbance of gap edges and prevent head slippage. In addition, the front face of the head has a black mirror finish to improve the head touch and prevent dust from adhering.

Closed loop dual capstan system is adopted for the mechanism part.
In this system, the head is placed in the center and the tape is pressed by two sets of capstan and pinch rollers to eliminate the effects of tape vibration and uneven tension in the loop, thereby reducing wow / flutter, modulation noise, speed fluctuation, etc.
In addition, high precision is achieved by fixing the core of the tape running system such as the funnel bilateral head and capstan to the die-cast frame.

An AC servo motor is used for the capstan drive motor.
By attaching a frequency generator to the motor shaft and combining it with a servo amplifier, changes in rotational speed are compensated and stable rotational speed with less vibration is achieved.

A FET is used for the first stage of the head amplifier. By adopting a direct coupling method in which an F & F head is directly connected to this FET, S/N and low-frequency characteristics are improved. In addition, all silicon transistors are carefully selected to be low-noise and high-gain types, thereby reducing distortion and noise.

Equipped with a tape selector for low-noise, high-output tapes (SLH).

Equipped with an auto shut-off mechanism. With this function, when a tape is wound on one reel, the mechanical part is automatically turned off and released.

Equipped with a mechanical tension servo mechanism that maintains the tape tension appropriately by mechanical servo.

Equipped with a tape height adjuster that prevents uneven winding of the tape due to deformation of the reel.

Equipped with a large VU meter.

A double volume knob is used for the volume, and the level of left and right can be adjusted.

A two stage switching type microphone attenuator of -15dB and -30dB is installed in the microphone amplifier circuit.
The distortion factor and S/N can be improved by switching the VU meter so that the deflection is optimized in the thick line range of the volume.

Microphone / line mixing is possible because the microphone input circuit and the line input circuit are independent.

Equipped with lineout volume.

Equipped with a pause switch.

Equipped with a 4-digit tape counter.

Equipped with built-in reel lock mechanism.
