Commentary
The third installment of the DS Series is a 3-way speaker system that adds a super-tweeter to the 2-way speaker system.
The DS 251 sold a total of 600000 units until the model was changed to the DS 251 mkII in 1973 and production was discontinued in 1976.
A 25 cm cone type woofer, PW 2517, is installed in the low range.
This unit was developed at the same time as the DS 301 Woofer and uses special press cone paper.
A 5 cm cone type tweeter is installed in the high range.
This unit is an acoustic type unit in which sound absorbing material is packed in the air chamber at the rear of the diaphragm. Since the lowest resonance frequency is as low as 600 Hz, crossover at low frequencies is possible, and the connection with the woofer is smooth.
The same 3 cm cone type super tweeter as DS 301 is mounted in the super high range.
This unit uses aluminum alloy molded plates for the diaphragm and suspension.
Equipped with a step-type attenuator, it can change from 2 kHz to 25 kHz in 3 dB steps.
This attenuator can be used to turn the Super Tweeter ON/OFF.
Acoustic air suspension is used in the enclosure, and 300g of sound absorbing material is packed tightly in a closed enclosure with strong joint structure to improve transient characteristics and distortion in the low frequency range.
The exterior is finished with natural walnut, and the front is made with double secondary RUNNET.
Also, the front baffle is covered with black leather.
