A monitor speaker system equipped with a bi-radial horn.

The bi-radial horn has been researched and developed by JBL Professional Devi John for several years. By adopting a unique shape in which two radial horns are crossed, the problems of conventional horns are solved.
There were four key points in the development of this horn : the directivity pattern in the horizontal and vertical directions is constant in the entire driver operating band (1 kHz to 16 kHz), the diffusion angle is the same as that of the woofer at the crossover frequency, the second harmonic distortion is reduced by improving the aperture, and the phase characteristics of the driver and the woofer are matched by shortening the horn.
Due to the shape of the bi-radial horn, the directional characteristics in the horizontal and vertical directions are 100 ° x100 °, and the sound pressure level both on and off the axis is flat. Moreover, by strictly controlling the directional characteristics, the bi-radial horn has the same diffusion angle as the woofer at the crossover point.
In addition, by making the throat section a long and narrow diffuser throat, the width is narrow enough for horizontal diffusion. In addition, the horn at the sharp opening is made of a hard material with low resonance to reduce second harmonic distortion and shorten the horn depth.

Two 38 cm cone type woofer 2234H are installed in the low range.
The magnetic circuit uses a low-distortion SFG circuit to significantly reduce the second harmonic distortion. The large voice coil with a diameter of 100 mm uses edgewise rolled copper ribbon wire. The voice coil is 19 mm long and designed to operate at a high magnetic flux density of 12,000 Gauss.
In the 4435, one woofer plays from 30 Hz to 1 kHz, and the other unit plays only below 100 Hz, so the 4435 can handle a maximum input of 300W from 100 Hz to reduced 22 Hz with a -3dB attenuation at 30 Hz. In addition, high sound pressure levels of 115 to 120 dB are obtained in the ultra-low range of 20 Hz to 30 Hz.

A horn type tweeter composed of a driver 2421A and a bi-radial horn 2344 is mounted in the high range.
The 2421A is a diamond suspension that replaces the 2420 suspension and allows for broadband, flatter playback. The diaphragm is made of ultra-thin aluminum and is molded with the suspension.

The network has a characteristic of 12dB/oct so that a smooth response can be obtained over a wide bandwidth. Moreover, by controlling the off-axis acoustic characteristics with the w-open network, a flat power response can be obtained both on-axis and off-axis.
The network is also designed to adjust the driver's mid - and high-frequency ranges independently, and is compensated by the level control of the front baffle.

The enclosure has a symmetrical unit layout to improve sound localization and phase characteristics by placing the woofer and tweeter in the same position.
The material is 22 mm thick hard particle board, and the exterior is walnut finished.
